Paul Eisler

1895, on Stage in Vienna

The earliest record I have found of a performance by Paul Josef Martin Eisler is this 1895 broadside, although his official debut was noted to be in 1893. The large poster is showing major wear to the tissue-thin paper, but most of the wording is legible.

At this December evening performance in Vienna 20 year old Eisler is playing a poetic group of pieces by Schuman, Liszt, Mascagni, Saint Saens alongside the soprano belle of the Vienna Opera, Antonie Schläger.

For a sample of what two of the program pieces are – this is a selection of Schuman’s Fantasie I Satz

and Listz’s Liehestraum
